This documentary photographic work was created in “El Peral”, the oldest psychiatric hospital in Santiago de Chile, known in its beginnings as “Open Door”, with a population of 350 patients.
Diego Flores’ high-contrast images reveal the darkness lurching within mental asylums. Holding up a mirror to our reality, the author comes to a cruel conclusion: “A significant part of the inmate population will live in the hospital until they die”. Here lies the importance of raising awareness and question if we truly are possessed of values that encourage our respect for those who act and think differently.
